Fall Glamping Near Asheville

October 5, 2026

What to Pack for a Mountain Stay

Pack layers, not warmth. A fall day near Asheville can start at 45 degrees and reach 70, then drop again after dark, and at 6,000 feet on the Parkway it may never leave the 40s. Bring a base layer, a mid layer, a rain shell, real shoes, a headlamp, and something warm for the fire. Everything else is optional.

What is the weather actually like in the mountains in fall?

This is the part people get wrong, and it is the reason packing lists matter here more than they do at the beach.

Average highs and lows for the Asheville area, from thirty year normals:

Month                Average high              Average low

September            79                                   58

October                 69                                   47

November             59                                   37

December             51                                   32

Three things those numbers hide.

The daily swing is the story. October averages a high of 69 and a low of 47. That is a twenty two degree spread inside one day, and you will be outside for most of it. One garment cannot cover that range. Three thin ones can.

Elevation changes everything. The valley floor at Old Fort sits around 1,400 feet. The summit of Mount Mitchell is 6,684 feet. The summit routinely runs twenty degrees or more colder than the valley you drove up from, with wind on top of that. If your day includes the Blue Ridge Parkway, pack for a different season than the one outside your tent.

Old Fort runs slightly warmer than Asheville. The valley sits lower, so the numbers above are a conservative guide rather than an exact one.

What should you actually pack for fall glamping?

The layer system, which is the whole list

Layer          What it does                              Bring

Base                    Moves sweat off your skin      Two long sleeve synthetic or merino tops. Cotton holds damp and holds cold.

Mid                      Traps heat, comes off              A fleece or a light puffy.

                                 when you climb

Shell                    Blocks wind and rain               A packable rain jacket. Mountain weather does not announce itself.

Warm layer        The one you will actually        A heavy sweater or a real jacket. Evenings by the fire run cold well before the                    for evening         live in                                          calendar says they should.

Clothing

  • Two pairs of pants that dry. Jeans in the rain are a long afternoon
  • Wool socks, more pairs than days
  • A warm hat and thin gloves for October and November. They weigh nothing and change everything after dark
  • A swimsuit. Yes, in fall. Explanation below
  • Something comfortable to sleep in, warmer than you would pack for home

Footwear

  • Trail shoes or light hiking boots with real tread. The trails here are rooty, rocky and often damp
  • A second pair you do not mind getting wet
  • Camp shoes for walking the property at night

Gear that matters here specifically

Item                                                          Why

Headlamp or flashlight                      It gets dark early and it gets dark completely. There is no ambient light in the valley

Portable battery                                  Not for signal. For the camera, the flashlight and the morning alarm

Refillable water bottle                        You will drink more than you expect at elevation

Paper map or                                       Covered below, and it matters

downloaded offline map

A book                                                   This is not a suggestion so much as a prediction

Firewood or a plan for it                     Ask what is available on property before you arrive

What do you not need to pack for glamping?

This is the advantage over camping, and knowing where the line falls saves you a full duffel.

Before you pack, confirm with your specific accommodation which of these are provided, because it varies by unit type and by property:

  • Tent, poles and stakes
  • Sleeping pad
  • A bed, in most units
  • Cooking setup, if there is a communal kitchen
  • Linens and towels, in most cabin and villa style units

At Wunderland, lodging ranges from forest villas to glamping pods to vehicle and tent camp sites, and what is included differs substantially between them. Ask when you book rather than discovering it at nine at night.

What should you pack for the sauna and cold plunge?

Here is the part most fall packing lists miss.

A swimsuit, a second towel, and shower sandals. Wellness amenities are increasingly standard at glamping properties in this region and they are at their best in cold weather, not in summer. A sauna in August is a nice idea. A sauna in late October, after a day on the Parkway, is the reason people rebook.

Wunderland’s amenities include a natural water cold plunge, a sauna and fire pits, alongside a grounding trail and stargazing areas. Pack for them.

How do you pack for having no cell service?

Some of the best glamping in these mountains sits in valleys where there is no signal at all. At Wunderland there is spotty cell service.

That changes what goes in the bag:

  • Download your directions before you leave the interstate. The last few minutes are where your phone stops helping
  • Screenshot or print your reservation, and the property address and phone number
  • Download music, podcasts or shows before you arrive if you want them
  • Bring a watch, or accept that you will stop knowing what time it is, which is usually the better outcome
  • Tell someone at home you will be unreachable, with the property’s phone number as the way to reach you
  • Bring a real flashlight, not a phone you are trying to preserve

Guests reliably describe the disconnection as the best part of the stay. It goes better when it is a plan rather than a surprise.

What should you pack by lodging type?

If you booked                                   Pack extra                                      Skip

A forest villa                                    Less than you think                     Most camp gear

A glamping pod                             A warm layer for sleeping,         Tent and pad

                                                          and confirm what bedding

                                                          is provided

A vehicle camp site                       Your own bedding                       Nothing, this is camping with amenities

                                                          and cooking setup

A tent camp site                             Full camping kit, plus a               Nothing

                                                          warmer bag than

                                                          the forecast suggests

Sleeping temperature is the most common packing mistake in fall. November lows in this region average around 37 degrees, and a bag rated to exactly the forecast low will feel about ten degrees short at four in the morning.

What is the best month for fall glamping near Asheville?

Month                                              What you get                                 What to know

September                                   Warm days, cool nights,             The most comfortable weather of the fall

                                                       green valleys,

                                                       early color on the peaks

Early October                              The high country peaking,         Busy weekends begin

                                                       comfortable days

Late October                                Mid elevation peak color,          The busiest two weeks of the year. Book early

                                                        firm trails, fire weather

Early November                           Valley color, thinning                 The best value of the season, and still fall color if you stay low

                                                        crowds, cold clear nights

The elevation timing behind that table is covered in the fall color guide. The short version: the valley holds color for weeks after the mountains above it have gone bare.

Frequently asked questions

What should you wear glamping in the fall?

Layers you can take off. A synthetic or merino base, a fleece or light puffy, and a rain shell will cover almost any fall day in these mountains. Add a warm hat and gloves for evenings from mid October onward.

Is it cold glamping in October in North Carolina?

Days are comfortable, averaging near 69 degrees in the Asheville area, and nights are cold, averaging near 47 and colder in the mountains. Pack for the night, not the afternoon.

Do you need a sleeping bag for glamping?

It depends entirely on the unit. Villas and most pod style accommodations provide bedding. Tent and vehicle camp sites generally do not. Confirm with the property before you pack.

What should you not bring glamping?

Cotton as your only layer, a bag rated exactly to the forecast low, dress shoes, and an expectation of cell service.

Can you do a sauna and cold plunge in cold weather?

That is when it is best. Pack a swimsuit and a second towel even for a November stay.

Is glamping near Asheville worth it in the fall?

Fall is the busiest season in these mountains for a reason. If you want it without the crowds, travel Tuesday through Thursday, or come the first week of November and stay at a lower elevation where the color is still on the trees.
