Cozy Season at Wunderland
Sauna, Cold Plunge and Winter in the Valley

Winter is the quietest and most comfortable season in the Old Fort valley. Days average near 50 degrees, the crowds are gone, and the property’s sauna, natural water cold plunge and fire pits are at their best in cold weather rather than warm. When it is too cold to hike all day, that is when this place works hardest.
What is cozy season?
The stretch from December through March, when the mountains empty out and the valley gets quiet.
Most people think of Western North Carolina as an October destination, and October earns it. But the version of these mountains that fills the calendar is not the version most worth having. In winter the overlooks are empty, the long views are the clearest of the year because there are no leaves in the way, and the property amenities that are pleasant in August become the entire point.
A sauna in summer is a nice idea. A sauna in February, with snow on the ridge and a fire circle waiting afterward, is a different thing altogether.
What is winter actually like in the valley?
Milder than people expect. The Old Fort valley sits at roughly 1,400 feet, which is low for these mountains, and that elevation does a lot of work.
Average highs and lows for the region, from thirty year normals:
Month Average high Average low
December 51 32
January 48 29
February 52 32
March 59 38
Two things worth knowing.
Days are more comfortable than the season’s reputation. An average January high near 48 degrees is a walkable, rideable, sit outside by a fire kind of day.
Elevation still rules everything. The high country is a different climate. Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet holds snow when the valley is dry, and the Blue Ridge Parkway closes sections for ice on short notice. Check current Parkway status the morning of, not the week before.
How do you use a sauna and cold plunge?
This is the question people are too polite to ask, so here is the plain answer.
The practice is contrast. You get hot, then you get cold, then you rest. Then you repeat it. The rhythm matters more than the numbers.
A simple structure for a first time:
Step Roughly how long What to expect
Sauna Ten to fifteen minutes, Heat, then sweat, then the point at which you want out. Trust that point
or until you have
had enough
Cold plunge Thirty seconds to The first ten seconds are the hard part. Breathe out slowly. Do not hold your breath
a few minutes
Rest Five to ten minutes This is not the optional part. This is the part that makes the other two worth doing
Repeat Two or three rounds Most people find the second round easier than the first
Practical notes. Bring a swimsuit and two towels. Hydrate before and after. Go slowly on the first round. Get out of the cold before you stop being able to breathe steadily rather than after.
And the honest caveat. Heat and cold exposure put real load on the body. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition, have blood pressure concerns or are on medication that affects circulation or temperature regulation, ask your doctor before you use either. Do not use a sauna or a plunge after drinking. Never plunge alone.
Wunderland’s amenities include the sauna, a natural water cold plunge, fire pits, a grounding trail, stargazing areas, guided meditation and on site massage. Our sauna temps reach 175-185 depending upon the weather outside. Our constant cold plunge tub temperature is 55, and in the late fall, winter and early spring we use the pond as the cold plunge - these temps get down to a brisk 40 degrees!
What is there to do when it is too cold to hike?
Winter travel writing tends to pretend the cold is not there. Here is the honest version.
On the property
If the day is Do this
Cold and clear The sauna and plunge rotation in the afternoon, then the fire circle at dusk. The stars in a valley with no light pollution are the reason people stay up.
Cold and wet Massage, guided meditation, the communal kitchen, and a long slow day of nothing in particular
Mild, which is most days The grounding trail, the hiking access into Pisgah National Forest, and the plunge afterward anyway
Genuinely freezing Fire, food, sauna, repeat. This is the day the trip is for
Within fifteen minutes
Downtown Old Fort has a brewery with a creekside patio, a bakery, a free state history museum and a gallery representing more than fifty artists. All of it is indoors, all of it is close, and all of it is quieter in January than it is in October. Our Old Fort guide covers it.
Winter is also when the local trail system is at its best for riding. The valley sits low enough that the Old Fort trails stay rideable most of the winter, on firm dirt, with nobody on them.
Within an hour
Black Mountain is fifteen minutes away and is at its best in December, when Holly Jolly fills the downtown. Asheville is thirty minutes. On days the gates are open, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers the clearest long views of the year, because the trees that block them in summer are bare.
Why is winter the best value here?
Three reasons, and they compound.
The season is quiet. October weekends in these mountains book out months ahead. January does not.
Midweek is quieter still. Tuesday through Thursday in winter is close to having the valley to yourself, and it is the stretch of the calendar most worth asking about when you book.
The amenities scale with the cold. A sauna, a plunge and a fire are worth more in February than they are in July. You are buying more of what makes the place good, in the season when fewer people want it.
If you work remotely and can move a few days, this is the argument. Cold clear mornings, an empty valley, and no cell service to interrupt anything. Bring what you need to work offline, because there is no signal, and confirm what connectivity exists before you plan a week of calls around it.

What should you pack for a winter stay?
- A base layer, a mid layer and a shell. The same system that works in fall, one layer heavier
- Wool socks, more pairs than days
- A warm hat and real gloves
- A swimsuit and two towels, for the sauna and plunge
- Shower sandals
- A headlamp. It gets dark early and it gets dark completely
- Downloaded directions, music and anything else you want, because there is no signal
- Something to read
Our fall packing guide covers the layer system in more detail. For winter, add weight to every layer and do not skip the hat.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wunderland open in the winter?
Confirm current seasonal availability by unit type with the resort when you book.
How cold does it get in Old Fort in the winter?
Regional averages run near 51 and 32 in December, 48 and 29 in January, and 52 and 32 in February. The valley sits at a low elevation for these mountains, which keeps it milder than the high country above it.
How do you use a cold plunge for the first time?
Sauna first, then the plunge for thirty seconds to a few minutes, then rest for five to ten minutes, then repeat. Breathe out slowly during the first ten seconds in the cold. Get out while your breathing is still steady.
Is a sauna and cold plunge safe?
For most healthy adults, used sensibly. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition or blood pressure concerns, or take medication affecting circulation or temperature regulation, ask your doctor first. Never use either after drinking, and never plunge alone.
What is there to do in the North Carolina mountains in the winter?
More than the season’s reputation suggests. Trails at lower elevations stay open and are quieter, the long views are clearer without leaves, small town Christmas events fill December, and property based wellness amenities are at their best.
Does it snow in Old Fort?
Snow is more common and more persistent at elevation than in the valley. The high country holds snow when the valley is dry.
Is there cell service?
Effectively none on the property. Download what you need before you arrive.
Is winter a good time to visit Asheville and the surrounding mountains?
It is the least crowded and most affordable season, with the clearest long views of the year. It rewards travelers who want quiet more than travelers who want a full itinerary.
